Youth and Adult Recreation Programs

The CWJRD Baseball program is a volunteer based program.  Our goal is to offer a fun and safe environment to help foster the love of the game. If you are interested in volunteering, please email [email protected] for more information.  Without volunteers we would not be able to offer a season.  No need to worry if you do not have previous experience.  We offer information and training.

Season Information

CWJRD has joined a new recreation baseball league for 2022.  We will be participating in the Mid-State Youth Baseball League (MSYBL) this year.  This league has several communities participating:  Amanda Clearcreek, Berne Union, Bloom Carroll, Fairfield Union, Lancaster, Liberty Union and Millersport.  T-Ball will play other CWJRD teams.  The MSYBL has operated for many years and is a very organized league that utilizes certified umpires.  Attached are the 2021 rules for each division.  These rules are in review and may have slight adjustments at the upcoming rules meeting in February.  Below are the divisions for baseball this season.  All ages are as of May 1.

Divisions: T-Ball - Ages 4.5-6

                Coach Pitch - Ages 6-8

                Minors - Ages 9-10

                Majors - Ages 11-12

Important Season Dates:  February 27 - Registration Ends

                                          Mid-March - Player Evaluations (exact date/times TBD)

March 28 - Practices begin (weather permitting)

April 25 - 16 game regular season begins (2 games per week)

June 20 - End of season tournament begins

July 1 - Tournament ends (at latest)

We are in need of coaches for 2022 at all levels.  If you are interested in coaching as a head or assistant coach, please indicate on your registration.  Please do not be intimidated on coaching or time commitment.  Find a friend or two and make it fun for the kids!  Everyone says they can’t commit to it due to time or no experience, but no one says an assistant can't cover the practices or games that you can’t attend.  I will give you any resources you need to be successful including practice plans, drills, etc.  I promise you; you will find it to be a rewarding experience!

Player Evaluations

Our goal is to create teams that are evenly split to create competitive balance amongst our teams.  In effort to accomplish this, CWJRD will hold player evaluations to make sure teams are evenly distributed.  More details will be sent out at a later date.

The MSYBL follows strict bat rules so that all teams are competing on an even playing field. Bats must be USA Baseball stamped and barrels can be 2 5/8” or less.  No 2 ¾” bats or any USSSA bats will be permitted for MSYBL play.  Your registration cost will include a jersey, hat and socks.  Catchers' equipment, limited batting helmets, and other baseball gear will be provided by CWJRD.  Participants will need a glove, baseball pants (check with coach for color) cleats, and also recommend their own batting helmet.

T-Ball players will continue to receive 3 pitches before hitting off a tee. We would like to continue to develop young players through this model until players are ready to move up to coach pitch. Coach Pitch age is 7-8 years old in most communities.  We have and will continue to allow 6 year olds to “play up” in Coach Pitch, but would ask parents of 6 year olds to place their child at the correct level of play.  Our goal is to place players in the best position to develop at the correct level and also participate safely.

Coach pitch plays with a hard baseball, while tee ball plays with a safety ball that is softer. Another big difference between T-Ball and Coach Pitch is in T-Ball, players will get 3 pitches to hit from a closer distance.  If they “strike out” and don’t hit the ball, they still get to hit off of the tee and run the bases.  In Coach Pitch, you get 7 pitches and have to decide which 3 pitches you will swing at.  If you strike out, you are out and return to the dugout.   Six year olds wanting to play Coach Pitch should have the ability to protect themselves from baseballs thrown/hit to them.  The physical development and understanding of gameplay of an older 8-year-old compared to a young 6-year-old can be a large gap.   When deciding between T-Ball and Coach Pitch, please consider your players current ability level when making your selection.

The focus of T-Ball is to focus on skill development, understanding of baseball and ultimately having fun.  T-Ball will start with 2 practices a week, then will transition to 1 weekday practice and 1 Saturday game, then finish the season with 2 games weekly and practice at the coach's discretion.  T-Ball will play approximately 10 games against other CWJRD teams.  There may be opportunity to play other MSYBL communities later in the season.  This added practice time will allow coaches to continue to teach the game slowly and develop individual skills while putting less emphasis on all games.
